The garden highlights the importance of gardens in BUPA care homes, where they provide sanctuary for residents, especially for those with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. "I'm delighted to be working with BUPA and Henley Salt on this exciting project," said Cleve. "Gardens provide both stimulus and solace, so their value in care homes, for both residents and carers, should not be underestimated."
The garden has many exciting features and plants to stimulate the senses, yet remains very calming and full of soul.
Features include a fluted circular raised planter, made from discarded black granite worktops, it not only looks sensational but is a great departure from the typically brutal raised planters that are so often provided for those that are restricted to wheelchair access.
A tonal wall, complete with a unique render effect, that changes colour hue in response to atmospheric changes provides the perfect backdrop for structural plants and shadows, these sort of challenges are always great fun, if a little stressful to achieve, they also pander to our creative flare as aspiring sculptors and artists.
An amazing 2200mm (4 tonne) concrete boule made by French artists Serge and Agnes Bottagisio-Decoux has been placed on a shallow reflective pool as an ergonomic textural comforter to the rear of the garden.
No strangers to successful show gardens, this has been the 25th RHS show garden that the team from Henley Salt has constructed and this is now the second Chelsea garden for their good friend and designer Cleve West.
